“We know that adolescence is a difficult time for our youth today and we wanted to create posters for health clinics that invite teens to engage in conversations about health,” Fontenot said. “These posters were designed to provide students with a friendly reminder that nurses, in particular, are safe allies in learning more about their health, and we hope that these posters will increase the potential for sensitive topics such as mental health. will reduce stigma.”

Mathis added, “Our initial idea was to display health promotion posters at our Hawaii Keiki High School clinic in HIDOE Public Schools, but once we saw the final messages and designs, we knew These posters can be displayed at any health clinic in Hawaii and even across the country. Relevant Health Messages For All Adolescents

Adolescence is an important and transitional phase of growth and development between childhood and adulthood. Fontenot and Mattheus held discussions with advisory groups to identify top youth health concerns and gather perspectives on preferred poster designs. Based on this information, the posters were planned to address the following topics related to youth health: healthy relationships, sexual health, mental health, and privacy. These themes are consistent with preferred health behaviors identified by both the National and Hawaii Youth Risk Behavior Surveys.

A Poster Dedicated To The Former State Counsellor

Fontenot and Mattheus are dedicating these posters to the late Ada Toyama, Hawaii State HOSA Assessor, who passed away in June 2022, just as poster development was completed. Toyama was an advisor to the group of HOSA 2021-2022 students who were members of the Youth Advisory Council. She was also a 2017 HOSA Hall of Fame inductee for her years of dedicated service as a state evaluator that grew the Hawaii HOSA program to where it is today.
